Young Moon

Trevor Montgomery has been writing and recording brooding ballads and blissful psychedelia as Young Moon for over a decade.  Utilizing vintage drum machines and atmospheric synths, Montgomery has a talent for lo-fi tracks with genuine lyrics exploring love, life, and death.

Having been in bands such as San Francisco post-rockers Tarentel and solo under the moniker Lazarus (Temporary Residence), in 2012 Montgomery released Navigated Like the Swan, his first album under the Young Moon moniker. According to The Wall Street Journal “It engulfs the listener—and sometimes even the narrator…”, while Consequence of Sound called it “…powerful and heartfelt…”

2016 saw the release of Young Moon’s sophomore album Colt (Western Vinyl), which would be Montgomery’s last release as a US-based artist.

At the end of 2019, following the suicide of a treasured friend, Montgomery packed up his life in San Francisco and shifted halfway around the globe to Nelson, New Zealand. He arrived in his new home just as the global pandemic took hold. Without a close community to moor himself to, Montgomery dove into work; he began renting an empty masonic temple, built a recording studio inside, and tore into a fresh batch of songs that would become the basis for Triggered By Sunsets (Orindal, 2023), the exquisite third LP from Bay Area expat.

Since the release of Triggered By Sunsets, Young Moon, as full live band experience with close friends from the Te Tau Ihu music community, have toured continuously through Aotearoa.  Including performances at the Nelson Art’s festival, Camp A Low Hum festival and support for US Post-Rock legends Explosions in the Sky.

Montgomery continues to write and record with Young Moon, with the Double EP Paraverbal Orchids/Young Moon is a Broken Bone released by Home Alone Music in February 2025.
